History

In August 2014, the residents of Leahy Trailer Park were told to find new homes. MLGW was shutting down the utilities on the property due to lack of payment from the property owner. The park residents could only hope that someone would come forward to pay the bill and save their homes. That same month, Harold Crye went under contract to purchase the property from John Leahy and paid the MLGW bill so the residents could remain in the park.

This property was originally started in the 40’s as Leahy’s Tourist Court. Here are a few excerpts on its history.

Leahy’s Tourist Court, Motel Court, and Trailer Park located at 3070 Summer Avenue is one of the more famous motels in Memphis, and yet many do not know why. It was the home to James Jones in 1949-50 while he wrote the award-winning book “From Here to Eternity. The book is now ranked at #62 on the list of “100 Best Novels”. Jones’ last novel “Whistle”, was based on his hospital stay in Memphis as he recovered from ankle surgery due to an injury in WW2.

In its heyday, Leahy’s Trailer Court was a thriving community. In the summer of 1949, author James Jones worked on his acclaimed novel “From Here to Eternity” while living at the trailer court. The fledgling author from Illinois traveled back to Memphis to finish his novel, but could not afford to stay in hotels like The Peabody or The Chisca. Therefore, James Jones hitched his travel trailer to his jeep and set up camp at Leahy’s Trailer Court in the summer of ‘49.
